Reports of Kidney, Muscle Damage in Crestor Users

crestor lawsuit

A study conducted by the American Heart Association found that Crestor had more than double the side effects of rival statin drugs. The study supported arguments from the public health organization Public Citizen that has petitioned the FDA to recall Crestor.

The American Heart Association found that Crestor was 6.8 times more likely to result in an adverse event compared to the competing drug Zocor. Crestor was found to be 2.2 times more dangerous than Zocor, another statin.

The group recommended that doctors consider prescribing statins other than Crestor as a first line of defense against high cholesterol. The group further concluded that those people taking Crestor should be monitored closely for serious side effects.

Crestor Side Effects

Crestor has been associated with rhabdomyolysis, a life-threatening condition that attacks the muscles and can destroy the kidney. In 2001, a competiting statin (Baycol) was withdrawn from the market after information indicated it subjected patients to an unacceptable risk of muscle and kidney damage.

Similar reports about Crestor have led Public Citizen, a consumer health organization, to petition the FDA to recall the drug. In March 2005, the FDA rejected the petition but agreed to alter labeling for the drug. The proposed label will alert physicians and consumers that Crestor can cause serious muscle problems and kidney damage.

The FDA has come under fire recently for its handling of dangerous drugs. In September 2004, Merck voluntarily removed Vioxx from the market after numerous studies concluded the drug greatly increased the risk of heart attack and stroke. During congressional hearings into the Vioxx recall, a top FDA researcher testified that the agency was unable to adequately protect the public from dangerous drugs.

New Study Contradicts FDA Findings on Crestor Side Effects

New research seems to challenge an FDA decision not to pull the cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor off the market, with data showing it causes more kidney and muscle problems than rival medications.

The FDA in March contended Crestor's risks were no greater than its competitors, and it rejected consumer efforts to remove the drug, made by AstraZeneca PLC, from store shelves. Instead, the FDA ordered a warning on the label, saying Crestor could cause serious muscle problems and kidney damage, especially among Asians.
